Mike was a good 'ol boy and the genuine article- what you saw was exactly what you got. He looked the same (okay, a touch grayer) the last time I saw him as he did the first time I saw him- scruffy, rough and more than a bit disheveled. Mike was a guy who never-NEVER- resorted to artifice.
He had his demons, but his love of The Lord showed through to all those who knew him. His funeral service was just like he was: funny, full of dry wit and laughter, and a testimony to his love of Jesus Christ.
Mike was like a miner's canary- if you looked at him and saw Christ (instead of a dirty biker, which is what he was on the outside), then you yourself were probably on speaking terms with our Lord and Saviour. If you called yourself a Christian, but looked down your nose at him and mounted your haughty horse, then you were/are in for a big surprise. No one was more fulfilling of the Lord's words about seeing a man for what he is inside and not judging by what he appears to be on the outside.
I laughed a lot at his service, and I cried. I wish I had seen more of Mike, but our lives kinda led us in different directions. It was my loss.
P.S. For those you you who remember the Biker movies of th '60's, yould'a loved his funeral procession: 100 Harleys two-by-two goin' down the road from Veneta to Noti- it was awesome. those were Mike's people, and they loved him.
G'bye Mike- I hope when my end comes I am as confident as you were (and everyone who knew you was) about where you'd be spending eternity. God Bless you, bro.
